“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
